Early teaching experience
As part of the ARTE301 course at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, my teaching partner and I developed and taught a four-lesson curriculum unit exploring the enduring idea of identity. Through this unit, students examined the many influences that shape who they are, including their personal experiences, relationships, interests, and cultural backgrounds. Each lesson encouraged students to reflect on different dimensions of identity and consider how identity can be represented visually through artmaking. Using a variety of materials and artistic processes, students created artworks that communicated aspects of themselves in thoughtful and individualized ways. This curriculum was implemented with fourth grade students at Prairieview-Ogden North Elementary School and sixth grade students at Prairieview-Ogden South Elementary School. Throughout the unit, students demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and personal reflection as they engaged in meaningful discussions and artistic exploration related to self-expression and identity.
Lesson 1 - cube room
In this lesson, students created an artwork to introduce us to them and tell us about their identity. They learned perspective and form,
explored how to build/shape, and practiced drawing skills. When they finished, students went on a gallery walk and got to experience their peers rooms as well.
Lesson 2 - cuddly animal friend
In this lesson, students created an artwork that connected to their first project. This project helped the students tell us more about the personal identity like they favorite animal or the student favorite color. They learned how to layer and make a form, they explored how customize their project to show personality , and practiced drawing skills. When they finished, students went on a gallery walk and then in a class discussion got to share what elements they liked in their peers work.
Lesson 3- contrast agamograph
In this lesson, students created a unique piece. An Agamograph is it kind of art that uses an accordion folded surface to display two distinct images that shift depending on the viewers angle. In our project, we also added an element of focus on contrast. This project they learned how to construct and organize , they strategized ways to show contrast In their two different images and practiced drawing skills. When they finished, students went on a gallery walk and then in a class discussion got to share what elements they liked in their peers work.
Lesson 4- ant farm & focal point
In this lesson, students created another unique piece. An art farm! This project gave another opportunity for the students to show their identity By giving them a project that was very open to personalization. In This project they learned how to construct shapes and organize/Recognize pattern , they strategized ways draw insects and other creative ideas and practiced focal point. When they finished, students went on a gallery walk and Then we Went around the class and they got to show what they decided to Put in the magnifying glass or the focal point.
Peer art lesson
Peer art lesson taught in class with a partner. The medium assigned for our project was clay and mosaic, so we designed a lesson focused on form and shaping through clay while incorporating color, pattern, and sequencing through our tesserae sequins.
