The reason I switched into education and I want to be a teacher is to inspire students and others to think creatively. I think in education for many years there has been a quote “ war on creativity” in my opinion. What I mean by this is the way most teaching is done now doesn’t really facilitate creative thinking if anything it feels like many kids now are being taught not to think creatively. I felt in school that it was stressed so much that there was always a right way to do things and like a wrong way to do things and no area for creativity but luckily I had a mom that really focused on ensuring that I had that ability to think creatively and I feel now as though it’s one of my strongest qualities. I hope that students will take from my art class, the ability to think critically through exploring their creativity, and become more open minded. I hope to balance structure and independence by creating a classroom that value students voice, creativity, resilience, growth, respect and personal expression. my goal is for the classroom to feel respectful, safe and comfortable, so students feel confident and comfortable, which I believe will lead to better and more authentic work. I would set clear expectations earlier on like respect, participation, and effort while still trying to keep the environment, supportive and student centered. If issues do arise, though, I would try to address them simply indirectly, giving the student first a chance to correct their behavior before then moving to natural consequences if the behavior continues. Overall, I hope for students to be engaged, take accountability, and build skills that go beyond just the classroom.
